Where is Mauritius
Mauritius is located 5854 km east of Perth, Australia
and 800 km west of Madagascar
(20 degrees south, 57.5 degrees
east). It
lies within the same latitude as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and
Rockhampton, Australia. This tropical island is 58 km long and 47 km
wide. Its dependencies are Rodrigues, Agalega and St Brandon.
Mauritius is an
island of approximately 1865 square kilometers with 330 kms of
coastline almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs,
resulting in stretches of white coral sand beaches. Also, the coral
reef acts as a barrier for sharks making the sea front within the
coral reef and beaches very safe swimming waters.
Languages
Main language is Creole. The roots of Creole are
in the French language, mixed with English, Arab, Indian and some
African dialects.
Cultural language is French. Newspapers are published mostly in French
and TV programs are mostly in French.
Almost everybody speaks French and understands English. It’s the
business-language, almost all contracts and laws are in English.
Children start school with French and English.
In many families one also speaks Indian languages, the Chinese
Cantonese or the Arabian dialects.
